Dog friendly DittiscombeDogs are welcome here at Dittiscombe with a nature trail and over ten acres of open space for 'walkies' on site.
There are dog-friendly beaches at nearby Start Bay and the historic village of Slapton boasts two excellent ‘dogs welcome’ pubs.
We take up to 2 dogs in Willows, and although we do restrict the total number during busy times, we will consider requests for 2 dogs in other cottages, depending on size, breed and age. We accept dogs in Honeysuckle, Willows, Dovecote, Buddleia and Rafters. There is a weekly charge per dog and further details of this can be found on our Prices & Availability page.
There are lots of places in this area that you can visit with your dog - beaches and coves, pubs and cafes. Dog-friendly beaches include Bantham, Bigbury, Salcombe North Sands, Slapton Sands/Torcross, Beesands, Thurlestone Sands and South Milton Sands.
There are a few restrictions during the summer time but for more information please check the Kingsbridge Tourist Information website
.
We would really recommend the Beesands and Prawle Point. Beesands is particularly nice and has a lovely dog friendly pub called The Cricket Inn. The best walk yet was East Portlemouth to Gara Rock – it’s a must if you have a dog!
We provide a map of our local, car-free walk to Slapton Village and Slapton Sands. The walk includes bridle paths, some quiet lanes, a nature trail, two dogs welcome pubs (The Tower and The Queens Arms) and a beach about 3 miles long! Similar walks can be found in a Green Lanes book which is provided in each cottage.
For sandy beaches try Mill Bay, which is situated opposite Salcombe, combined with a coastal walk to Gara Rock, returning inland; or the soft sands of the Avon Estuary either at Bigbury or Bantham where although there is a restriction on the main beaches during the summer months, you can walk up the estuary at low tide.
Using the South West Coast Path you will come across some spectacular coastal scenery and it can be done in bite-size chunks. For instance park at East Prawle and walk east to Lannacombe, Great Mattiscombe, Hallsands and Beesands (stopping off at the dog friendly pub called The Cricket Inn) and on to Torcross (there are cafes and a pub here). Or again from East Prawle go west to Gammon Head, Gara Rock and Mill Bay at East Portlemouth (here you will find the Venus café with outdoor seating). The coastal path from Bolberry Down either west to Hope Cove, Thurlestone and Bantham, or east towards Salcombe has spectacular scenery. There are dog-friendly pubs/restaurants at Bolberry (The Port Light) and at Bantham (The Sloop).
On all coastal walks you will need to watch out for livestock as some of the land adjoining the path is grazed by sheep and cattle, and some almost sheer cliff drops too!
