Over the last few years there has been a great swell of interest in locally sourced and organic food and drink, and here in South Devon we have an abundance of excellent food producers and chefs.
Fresh fish and shellfish are a speciality of this area and Britannia Shellfish have a shop at Beesands selling fresh catch daily. And a visit to the Riverford Field Kitchen near Buckfastleigh starting with a guided tour of the organic farm, and ending in a delicious lunch made by Jane Baxter and her team is a special treat.
We have several excellent pubs in nearby villages serving local food and drink for all range of tastes and budgets. We, and our guests, recommend many of them including The Fortescue Arms in East Allington, The Start Bay Inn at Torcross, The Cricket Inn at Beesands and The Millbrook Inn at South Pool. More great eating-out suggestions can be found on the visitsouthdevon and lovetheflavour websites.
Or why not have a selection of great food delivered to your cottage door by the Local Food Company.
To discover more about the food and drink on offer from our area there are now three well established food festivals during the year: Dartmouth Food Festival in October; South Devon Crab Festival, held in August; and Abbfest in Newton Abbot.
Overlooking the Parish green in Stokenham village is The Tradesmans Arms, just 4 miles from Dittiscombe. Reports from both local residents and visitors alike are saying good things about this pub. Real ales, a locally sourced menu, a cosy bar, pretty beer garden and great Sunday roasts are all on offer.
Oyster Shack a seafood restaurant located near Bigbury beach offering a great selection of oyster and mussel dishes, plus a 'daily catch' menu, and something to choose for those not so keen on fish! Eating indoor or out, it's very informal and friendly. For something different they also provide Oyster Shack picnics during the summer.
Just outside Dartmouth in the village of Stoke Fleming, The Brill Plaice is not just a fish restaurant. With lovely sea views and a small but appetising menu of fish, vegetarian and meat starters and main courses, plus home-made desserts and a local cheese board, this restaurant offers great value for money.
